The King’s College Sailing Team made some great advancements over the last week in the Auckland Cup. The team achieved 4th place overall despite the tricky weather conditions.

The team started off slowly after losing to Westlake in a tight race. Following this loss, the team picked up their pace to gain back-to-back wins against Kristin, Dio, St. Kentigerns and Epsom Girls. However, towards the end of the day they lost their momentum against the well-trained Whangarei team.

This loss set the King’s Sailing Team up for a must win race in the pool competitions against Macleans College. Fortunately, the team pulled together and finished with a 1 and 2, putting them into the knockout stage. In an unfortunate turn of events, the wind started to die as a northerly was confronted with a southerly. With almost no wind at all and a penalty awarded, the team ended up losing their quarterfinal race to Auckland Grammar School.

Sitting in the third and fourth final against Takapuna turned out to be a tougher prospect than expected and with a disappointing loss against AGS, the team could not bounce back to win.

Overall, the crew placed 4th out of 16 crews which remains a huge achievement. Congratulations to the King’s Sailing Team - Sam Scott (Captain - Year 13, Peart), Oliver Scott (Year 11, Peart), Kelly Su (Year 12, Marion Bruce), Jamie Walden (Year 13, Greenbank), Andrew Wight (Year 11, Major), Tyler Simpson (Year 13, Greenbank) and Poppy Hoskin (Year 13, Marion Bruce).
