The rowing team took part in their first regatta of the 2020/21 season and had a fantastic weekend on the water.

Plenty of sunshine and hardly any wind meant ideal racing conditions for the rowers and it was great to see the hard work in training paying off. Saturday and Sunday were raced as separate regattas with crews placed in divisions in their respective events. Normally regattas have heats on Saturday and then finals on Sunday, but this new format meant that everyone got between 3 – 6 races across the two days.

Saturday

The Novice boys took to the water in their first ever race on Saturday and managed to get down the 2km course in 6th place in the boys Intermediate Octuple. They were racing in a slightly tougher category before their main event, the Novice Octuple, where they finished 4th in Division 2.

A few other highlights from Saturday was the 3rd place finish in the A final of the men’s Club coxless pair by Alex Tooman (Year 12, Selwyn) and Cameron Abel (Year 12, Major), and three King’s eights finishing in 2nd place in Division One and 1st and 3rd in Division Two.

Sunday

A new day and another opportunity to get out on the water and improve on Saturday’s results. The King’s College crews did not disappoint! The Novice boys were starting to find their feet and finished second in Division 1 of the Novice Octuple event, just behind Auckland Grammar and ahead of Hamilton Boys. Te Aria Jackson (Year 12, Marion Bruce) had a fantastic row in the Women’s Intermediate single scull and also finished second in Division One.

The Senior boys were in fine form on Sunday securing a first place in the Men’s Intermediate Coxed four, Men’s Intermediate Coxed quad and the Men’s Intermediate Coxed eight!
