On Wednesday 22nd of February, the King’s College Asia Committee hosted the annual Chinese Lantern Festival on the main quad of the College.

230315 Lanternfest

The event was an immense success, with record student turnout, laughter and joy. During the festival, students witnessed traditional Chinese performances by the Auckland Chinese Cultural Society and by many of our talented fellow students, including traditional Chinese dances, songs, and instrumental performances. There was a variety of food - from homemade dumplings to Mr. Whippy - we’re sure tastebuds were satisfied. From student feedback, the highlight was the lamb skewers!

The event’s success was reliant on the support of many from the King’s community. We wish to express our most sincere gratitude and appreciation for Ms Emma Featherstone, the Music Department, the Chinese Parents Association (in particular, Mel Guan) and our valued sponsors for their hard work in the background creating such an authentic and meaningful cultural experience. We are grateful for your partnership and for your commitment to promoting cultural understanding and education.

To our fellow Collegians, we express our deepest heartfelt thank you for your participation and engagement that helped make the event a success. It was a delight to see your faces light up as you watched the vibrant performances and learned about Chinese culture and traditions. We hope that you enjoyed the event and that it provided you with a valuable opportunity to appreciate and celebrate cultural diversity.

Thank you to our co-leaders of the Asia Committee for 2023 - Matthew Chen (Year 13, Averill) and Sammi Shi (Year 13, Taylor).
