In April, Hanbo Xie (Year 13, Peart) made the New Zealand team for the International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) – an impressive feat that places him among the top physics’ students in the country.

The event was originally scheduled for Romania but was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid-19. Instead, the teams battled it out over Zoom.

Hanbo helped steer the New Zealand team to 3rd place – an outstanding result and significantly better than the 8th place in 2019. The NZ team missed out on 2nd place by only 0.8 points!

In Hanbo’s own words: “It was a very fun event. We had 10 fights in total in the 5 rounds, I went up three times, presenting my question on Soap Membrane Filter (against Thailand), opposed Singapore on the same problem, and opposed Thailand on Drifting Speckles”.

Hanbo impressed the judges and won all three of his fights. In addition, it was the first time a team had beaten Singapore in a ‘fight’ since records began.
