The First XI Boys' Hockey team took part in a three day tournament at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton over the holidays. They played five games in three days which was a test of fitness as well as a useful guide to team formations.

Kings Hutt Int

Whangarei Boys’ High School – W 3-0

Napier Boys’ High School – L 2-4

Hamilton Boys’ High School – L 0-1

Hastings Boys’ High School – W 3-0

Hutt International – D 2-2

Whangarei Boys’ High School – W 3-0

With the bench being rotated constantly we were trying out various combinations. King’s got off to a great start scoring in the first couple of minutes with a well taken goal from Tom Lindberg. King’s dominated the midfield and had numerous circle entries but couldn’t convert chances from penalty corners. However further goals by Tom Lindberg and Scott Illbrun but the result beyond doubt.

Napier Boys’ High School – L 2-4

The pace and intensity of this game was a step up from the morning and Napier were quick to exploit mistakes and we conceded a goal in the first minute. King’s produced the goal of the game with a well-structured passage of play from the back finished off with rasping shot from Tom Lindberg. Being 2-1 down Karl Wallace scored a great individual field goal and we were in for a hectic last 10 minutes. With the score of 2-2 Napier took their chances and we were found wanting at times in defence.

Hamilton Boys’ High School – L 0-1

A poor first half saw us lucky to get into the break scoreless. The second half was much improved and it was not till 4 minutes from the end of the game that Hamilton scored. Again King’s had numerous chances from PC’s but were unable to convert.

Hastings Boys’ High School – W 3-0

This was an interesting game in that Hastings played what we call a half court (all players behind the halfway line) – however after numerous circle entries King’s opened the scoring with a reverse stick shot from Scott Illburn and followed it up with a well-worked PC which Karl Wallace converted. In the last few minutes Noah Hamlin added a third with a tap in goal after an effective circle entry.

Hutt International – D 2-2

We saved the worst till last. This was to quote ex-All Blacks coach Steve Hansen  ‘a game you flush down the dunny’. At half-time King’s were 2-0 down and had to be more creative in breaking down a ‘park the bus’ defence. Tom Lindberg got a goal with 5 minutes to go and with the very last play Karl Wallace equalised with a PC. Some good lessons were learnt from this game.
