Finn Matheson (Year 12, Marsden) has put his summer holidays to good use, competing in a recent national archery team selection event that resulted in a third place for the young competitor over the two day, double WA720 and double round robin tournament.

This event followed on immediately from eight days of competition at the Outdoor Nationals, making it a gruelling tournament for all 62 athletes taking part.

To qualify to take part in the event only those who had shot international qualifying scores could participate.

On the final day Finn won against four of the other other archers in match play, finishing in third place thereby earning a place in the 4-man national open men’s team for the first time. This is an extraordinary achievement for a 16-year-old and ensures he is still in the running for a place in the NZ team for the Olympics 2020.

Finn has previously qualified for the Junior World Championships in Madrid, the World Indoor Field Championships in Wellington and the Trans-Tasman Challenge here in Auckland. He’s also been selected to attend an 8-day residential training camp in Taipei with the Taipei national team.
