King’s runners raced well at the Auckland Secondary Schools Cross-Country Championship in very wet underfoot conditions at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga on Thursday 2nd June.

Junior Boys 4000m

Quinn Moss (Year 10, Parnell) in 2nd place  14.38 was our stand-out performer in his first race since March. Sam Rickerby (Year 9, Peartqu) continued to improve, finishing a galant 6th 14.59 and making up the 3 man team. Quinn Winwood (Year 9, Parnell) was home in 14th place 15.40. The three man’s team finished with a total of 22 points and 2nd place, beaten by Westlake on the countback also 22pts  (3rd,7th and 12th.  Ivor Martin (Year 9, Parnell) was home in 19th place 15.59.

Intermediate Boys 5000m

Our top performing intermediate runner Jack Erikson had to scratch with illness  leaving Reid Tisch (Year 10, Greenbank) to run solidly for 28th  19.55 closely followed by Leo Bamfield (Year 11, Major)  29th 19.59 in a strong first up run for the College.

Senior Girls 4000m

For the first time in many years Kings had 5 senior girls race and for many it was their first race at this level.

Cassie Wood (Year 12, Taylor) was King’s top performer with a solid 11th 18.29.  Stella Chaplin (Year 12, Taylor) in her first race picked up a number of places in the second half of the race moving up to 17th 19.39 with King’s other runners closely clustered:  Kate Christie (Year 13, Marion Bruce) 22nd 22.00, Kate Illerbrun (Year 11, Middlemore) 23rd 22.26,  and Olivia Barron (Year 11, Marion Bruce) 24th 22.31.

The 3 person team finished  5th. The Girls now look forward to the Auckland Road race later in the year and would be keen for more girls to join them.

Senior Boys 6000m

Illness forced Toby Tasker and James McGuire to scratch, leaving Nick Poppelwell (Year 13, Parnell) to run alone. This year Nick had a strong performance and improved on his last year’s run finishing in 30th place in a time of 26.22.
