The annual Chemistry Olympiad is an international chemistry competition for teams of four young people from around the world.

The New Zealand team is selected, trained and coordinated as a collaboration between the universities and high schools. The 55th Olympiad is to be held in Switzerland from 16-25 July 2023.

Eight of the nine AS Chemistry students who sat the Chemistry Olympiad selection exam at the end of Term 3 were successful with four winning gold and four earning bronze.  These students can choose if they would like to continue with the next stage of the rigorous process that is involved in selecting the New Zealand team for the Chemistry Olympiad in 2023.

In this next stage the students will be sent work to complete, and then they will sit a written exam towards the end of term 1, 2023.

The best 20 students from this exam will be invited to attend a camp at Auckland University  during the Term 1 holidays. From this camp a team of 4, plus a non-traveling reserve will selected to go to Switzerland.

Whatever the outcome, all of the students involved in this process will benefit from the accelerated Chemistry material that they will be asked to grapple with during the next few months.

The Chemistry Department has not had this number of successful candidates in recent years!
