This year, King’s had four teams competing at the South Auckland Regionals. Each team played six games and it was a test of mental strength for many.

After a tense battle with the Papatoetoe High School team, the King’s Premier team came out on top claiming first place and Gold at the South Auckland Chess Regionals. The team has now qualified for the National Tournament in Mount Maunganui at the end of the term.

Team members were:

  1. Winston Weng (Year 9, Parnell)
  2. Darrick Pan (Year 12, Major)
  3. Kimberley Yuan (Year 12, Marion Bruce House)
  4. Nathaniel Masfen-Yan (Year 13, Greenbank)

The following were awarded the top board player at the conclusion of the competition.

The King’s second team came 3rd with a well-earned Bronze medal and at one stage were the leading team.

  3. Dimithri Gallage (Year 13, Peart)
  4. Owen Bao (Year 13, Major)

In the year of celebrating 40 years of girls at King’s, Kimberly Yuan, has won our first medal for our wāhine in Chess.
