Staff vs Prefects Football - On a Wet Winter Thursday, Experience Shone Through

Wednesday 18 June 2025

A packed crowd huddled along the sidelines to witness the spectacle unfold. The match began frantically, resembling a game of ping pong more than football. But gradually, the quality began to shine through. A few early penalty shouts were waved away by the ref before the deadlock was finally broken. With no VAR or linesmen in place, a couple of corner appeals were ignored before a loose pass across the box found Head of Art Jay Presnell, who calmly slotted it home.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0. Athletic Development Coach Hayato Yoneto was brought down in the box, and Reverend Gareth Walters put the ball into the top corner to get the second goal of the match.

After brisk half-time team talks, the teams were back out.

The teachers needed to draw on their experience, and they did just that. Soaking up pressure with calm composure, they knew one more goal could put the match to bed. A rifled shot from Digital Marketing Assistant Sam Bottomley was parried into the path of Selwyn Housemaster Kevin Putt, who tucked it away with confidence. Final score 3-0 to the staff football team.

It was a great game, despite the miserable weather, with loads of fun and banter on the pitch and the prefects showed some excellent skills and good humour during the match. We look forward to another match up in Term 3 which will hopefully be played in more forgiving conditions!
