Spiritual Life at King's

King’s students are encouraged to explore their personal faith and, through spirituality, grow into well-rounded and grounded individuals.

The College is founded on Anglican traditions and ethos, and our beautiful Memorial Chapel serves as the spiritual heart of the school. It is a core value of the school to affirm the significance of the Christian spiritual journey.

Our grounding in the Anglican faith is evident in our Religious Education curriculum, community service programmes, Voyager course, and Chapel Choir, among other aspects of school life. The Chaplaincy team is critical to the King’s culture, fostering a mindset of service to others and also providing very important support and connection for our students.

Memorial Chapel

The Memorial Chapel is a place of worship, reflection, and connection.

Its doors are always open to staff and students during the day, providing a quiet space for prayer and contemplation. Services are held here every day of the week and on Sundays to accommodate the wider College community. The talented Chapel Choir forms the backbone of the strong musical tradition in the chapel, and the Chaplains’ offices are located in the cloisters at the rear of the chapel. These too have an open door policy.

Chaplaincy team

The team of chaplains at King’s College are an invaluable source of support for our students.

Meet the team that cares for the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of all at the College:

Our community service programme

Through community service, King’s students can put their faith into action.

Our ‘Christianity at Work’ programme creates opportunities to engage with the community and teaches the importance of giving time and skills to the service of others.

We partner with a number of local programmes and organisations including:

  • Mangere Refugee Centre
  • Reading in Schools
  • Middlemore Hospital
  • Women’s Refuge Centre
  • IHC Homes and IHC Social
  • local retirement homes
  • daycare centres
  • after school programmes

We are always open to new community service ideas and keen to support student initiatives. Please email a member of our chaplaincy team with any community service ideas or enquiries.

Opportunities for students

There are plenty of opportunities for King’s students to get involved with spiritual life at the College.

Voyager

Over three days of fun, this extra-curricular Christian course aims to explore issues around meaning, love, eternity and purpose. It also offers students the opportunity to be Confirmed in our Confirmation Service held in the Chapel.

Sacristans

This is one of the key student leadership roles at King’s College. There are four Senior Sacristans and 12 House Sacristans who support the work of our chaplains and help with the community service programme..

Chapel Choir

The choir is an important part of King’s life, open to all who love to sing. The group rehearses regularly, sings at Sunday Services, and takes part in various competitions and events throughout the year.

Religious studies

Religious studies at King’s College is incorporated into the Positive Education curriculum for Years 9 to 11, exploring religion, faith, and spirituality.

These studies approach the topic as both an academic pursuit and something that can add appreciatively to our lives, and the lives of others.

The programme from Year 9 through to Year 11 aims to help students understand the basis upon which the special Anglican character of King’s College is built, in an open, engaging and critically thoughtful way. As students move through the College, they have the opportunity to consider the basics of the Christian faith, explore the big questions as well as community service, learn about the world’s main religious traditions and, if they wish, engage in an academic programme of study at Year 11.

Year 9: A Firm Foundation – Exploring Anglican Faith, in the Christian Tradition
Year 10: World Faiths, The Church’s History, and Community Service.
Year 11: NCEA Level 1 Religious Studies.

All current and any prospective students are welcome to contact the Religious Studies Department to explore opportunities to study Religious Studies at senior levels.
