Kirkpatrick played 39 tests for the All Blacks between 1967 and 1977, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1980 and was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2003.

The Fitzpatrick-Kirkpatrick Cup (est. 2008), contested between King's and Sacred Heart, is named after Kirkpatrick and fellow former All Black Sean Fitzpatrick.

Kirkpatrick attended the annual game at King's in May, where he spoke at the pre-match about how his time at King’s helped him to achieve so much in his life.
