Held in Whangārei, our Girls' 1st XI Hockey team played to win at the 2026 Federation Cup and Marie Fry Trophy.
Staff attending: Andrew Massey and Rebecca Baker
Day One
A rough start to the 2026 Federation Cup up against a ruthless Whangārei Girls' High School side at ITM Hockey Centre.
The girls lost to two field goals at 11 and 29 minutes, and then a penalty corner at 39 minutes to settle the score at 0-3 to Whangārei.
Final score: King's 0 vs 3 Whangārei Girls' College
Day Two
Two penalty corners to Casey Halliday (Year 11, Marion Bruce) at 20 and 48 minutes, and a field goal each to Samantha Sutherland (Year 12, Taylor) and Luca Morton (Year 13, Taylor) at 22 and 29 minutes, respectively.
Final score: King's 4 vs 1 Aquinas College
Day Three
The King’s 1st XI girls put on a fantastic display against St Margaret's College for the hockey community, parents, and Headmaster. It was one of grit, determination, and resilience to knock over the defending champs 2-1 in our last game of pool play.
After an impressive attack down the left flank, the team found Alexis Tree (Year 12, Taylor) in the circle where she pivoted and shot. The initial shot was saved but she followed up to put her next shot in the goal.
St Margaret’s stepped up a gear in the second quarter well as the umpires. With only 10 on the field and St Margaret’s applying sustained pressure with King’s conceded a penalty corner which was converted into a goal. Scores locked up one apiece.
The girls stepped up their effort with Luca Morton stealing possession and running through the St Margaret’s midfield and defence to pass to Zoe Driscoll (Year 13, Middlemore) on the spot who expertly slipped the ball passed the keeper into the goal.
Both teams created more scoring opportunities, but both keepers, Scarlett Morris (Year 13, Marion Bruce) for King’s, were superb and kept all the remaining attempts out.
Final score: King's 2 vs 1 St Margaret's College
On a side note, we also won the disciplinary competition with two green cards and a yellow. Playing with only 10 players for 9 minutes was a big ask against the top Christchurch school. They were harsh decisions handed out by the umpires.
Three teams in our pool finished on 6 points but both the other two had better goal differences so we missed out on moving into the top 16 at Federation Cup and are now competing for the Marie Fry Trophy.
Day Four
A penalty corner to Casey Halliday at just 2 minutes into the game, and a field goal each to Zoe Driscoll and Halliday at 29 and 58 minutes, respectively.
Final score: King's 3 vs 1 St Oran's College
Day Five
One penalty corner from Casey Halliday at 20 minutes, and one field goal from Jessie Bickelmann (Year 11, Taylor). One green card issued to Freddie Hatton (Year 13, Taylor).
Final score: King's 2 vs 2(3) St Matthew's Collegiate School
Day Six
Field goal from Zoe Driscoll at 23 minutes. One green card issued to Freddie Hatton.
Final score: King's 1 vs 0 Craighead Diocesan School
Day Seven
Two penalty corners, both from Casey Halliday at 4 and 55 minutes.
Final score: King's 2 vs 0 Wellington Girls' College
