Theatresports is a competitive form of improvisational theatre where student actors work in a team to create stories, scenes, songs and poems on the spot. This is then judged on a point system much like a sporting event or match.
The King’s Premier Theatresports team of Captain Trey Goodare (Year 13, Peart), Theo Boland (Year 13, Major), James Floerchinger (Year 13, Marsden) and Henry Dawson (Year 12, Selwyn) - took to the stage in last night’s semi-finals of the Auckland Regional Championships.
Hosted by last year’s champions Saint Kentigern College with a lively and supportive audience attending, King’s went head-to-head with some of the most experienced and competent teams in the region.
We knew it was going to be a tough night, when straight off the bat, King’s drew ‘Alphabet’ - requiring each new sentence in a scene to begin with the next letter of the alphabet. Creditably and defying all odds, King’s played a very strong scene to place second. The next game, ‘Slo-Mo’ commentary, required commentators to enact an audience ‘ask-for’ – took the shape of two contestants having a clean-off in a bathroom – all of course, played in ‘slow motion’. Again, the onstage ‘mime’ was very strong… commentated magnificently by the team of Theo and Henry.
By the time the MC called ‘half-time’ we were fighting strong for second place with St Kents, behind a magnificent, flawless Onehunga High. But two challenging back-to-back ‘open scene’ performances in the second half, coupled with some outstanding, clever and creative story-telling by Onehunga and SKC, meant that King’s had to settle for 3rd overall.
It was a fair result on a night where experienced teams were bringing their ‘A-Game’ to make the season ‘finale’. It was also a humbling night after the antics of two weeks ago when we won on home-soil, but as they say, ‘Eating humble pie is not just great for the waist-line it is even better for the heart…’ and will do much to set us up for next year as we continue to build on the back of a stellar first campaign.
