Subject Selection for 2027

Wednesday 24 June 2026

The process of subject selection for 2027 begins in earnest next term.

The information gathered through this provides us with the data required to make decisions regarding the number of classes to plan for each subject and what teaching resources will be needed to deliver the curriculum. The Senior School Courses of Study Guide and the Junior School Courses of Study Guide are available to view on our website.

Please start thinking about subjects for next year over the coming holidays. There will be a Subject Options Evening on Friday 14 August, between 4pm and 6pm, at which students entering Years 11, 12 and 13 and their parents will be able to find more information about possible subjects.

Geoff Smith – Deputy Head - Academic is in the process of meeting with each of the Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 year groups explaining the subject selection process and highlighting the importance of making carefully informed decisions.

  • Year 9 students entering Year 10 – select two option subjects from Art, Coding, Financial Education, French, Latin, Music, Performing Arts, Spanish, Te Reo Maori and Technology. Selected students may be able to choose the Athletic Performance Class or the Learning Centre. Apart from languages, students can select subjects that were not previously studied as Year 9 options.
  • Year 10 students entering Year 11 - select English (CIE or NCEA), Mathematics (CIE or NCEA) and four option subjects. They will need to decide which pathway, CIE or NCEA, they plan to follow in Year 12 and select their Year 11 subjects accordingly. In selecting Year 11 subjects, students should be aware of the prerequisites required to study various Year 12 subjects. These prerequisites are described in each of the subject descriptions in the Senior Courses of Study Guide and are summarised on page 33 of the guide.
  • Year 11 students entering Year 12 - select English and four option subjects. These will normally be all CIE or all NCEA subjects. In many cases they will need to meet prerequisites to be able to study a subject. These prerequisites are described in each of the subject descriptions in the Senior School Courses of Study Guide.

Year 12 students entering Year 13 NCEA - select five NCEA subjects. In many cases they will need to meet prerequisites to be able to study a subject. These prerequisites are described in each of the subject descriptions in the Senior School Courses of Study Guide.

  • Year 12 students entering Year 13 CIE - normally select four CIE subjects. Very able students can apply to Geoff Smith – Deputy Head Academic for permission to take a 5th CIE subject. In many cases they will need to meet prerequisites to be able to study a subject. These prerequisites are described in each of the subject descriptions in the Senior School Courses of Study Guide.

Key Dates:

  • Monday 10 August: Subject selection begins. Students will be sent an email with a link to their “Web Preferences” page where they will be able to make their selection.
  • Friday 14 August: Subject Options Evening (4pm to 6pm)
  • Friday 21 August: Subject selection completed. All students should have entered their subject selection by the end of this day.
  • Friday 29 January 2027: Subject Change Day, which is the Friday before Auckland Anniversary Weekend. We ask students to give careful thought to their subject choice but inevitably, some will have a change of mind regarding subjects. Subject changes will not be allowed after the end of Week 1 of Term 1.
