Middlemore House

Student Perspective: Full Boarding Weekend

Thursday 26 February 2026

The annual Full Boarding Weekend at King’s College was packed with fun activities for the students of Middlemore, St John’s, School and Selwyn Houses to take part in. Middlemore kicked off the weekend with a scavenger hunt in groups of six made up of girls from all year levels. Highlights of the bonding event included eating cupcakes with no hands, creating a group dance, and the relentless effort to collect envelopes as quickly as possible to solve the final puzzle and win the hunt.

Saturday continued with our own rendition of a fashion show – “Trash to Fashion”. Each group had to design and create outfits entirely out of recycled materials, resulting in some hilarious and impressively creative looks. Sunday was no less enjoyable, as the girls headed to Parnell Baths for a swim and barbeque to wrap up the weekend.

The Full Boarding Weekend focused not only on strengthening bonds within each House, but also across the wider boarding community. All four Houses participated in the highly anticipated water balloon fight on the field, with Middlemore and School teaming up against St John’s and Selwyn in a chaotic and exciting competition.

Overall, the Full Boarding Weekend was a fun and memorable few days that brought our boarding community closer together.

STJ All the Way!

Last weekend we had our St John’s stay in boarding weekend. This is where all St John's boys stay on the weekend to help each individual build a relationship with the House. The main focus of this weekend is to allow the new boys and Year 9 students to be introduced into the House with the guidance of the STJ's peers and staff. Over the weekend we covered lots of fun activities to help build connections within the House but also other boarding students. These activities included a STJ's quiz night, a massive water balloon fight between the boarding Houses, a trip to the Parakai pools, and much more.

We started our weekend on Friday night with taking the House out for a swim, following with a STJ's quiz that our Year 13’s had made. With the whole House's participation the quiz went great with boys winning chocolate prizes for placing.

On Saturday STJ’s had the privilege to go into our community and clean up the streets of rubbish. This was a great opportunity for our boys to earn some community service hours. We split into three groups and helped clean the streets around the College as well as within the gates.

After our community service the Year 13 dorm took the whole House out to the track where we tested each runner to see their athletic ability for Athletics Day. This was great as it helped finalise relay runners, track runners, and field eventers so that we were prepared for athletics. Just after organising athletics we ran our three relay teams (intermediate, senior and junior) against Selwyn and School Houses as a little competition between boarders.

On Saturday night our Year13’s had planned to take the boys out for 45 minutes to do an activity. After setting up everything prior we decided that the year 11’s and 12’s would play dodgeball while the year 9’s and 10’s would play basketball - the Year 13 dorm would supervise and referee. This was a great success with everyone getting involved.

Sadly with weather not looking good on Saturday and unsure of the weather on Sunday we decided to call off previous plans of going to Maraetai Beach for the day and instead went to Parakai pools with School House. This worked perfectly in our favour as we had a wonderful day of weather. The Parakai Springs were extremely fun with boys playing games of rugby, going down giant hydra slides, swimming in the pool all day and having an amazing feast there.
