The weekend before last saw a very entertaining weekend of Sevens rugby in Hamilton with the King’s College team narrowly losing 17-24 in the final against Rotorua Boy’s High School. Despite this final loss, the team had shocked the Waikato locals with a comprehensive win over national favourites Hamilton Boy’s High School (HBHS) in their semi-final winning 25-7.
Saturday was about qualification and a very hard draw saw Hamilton Boy’s and Rotorua Boy’s in our pool, along with Papamoa High School and Rototuna High School. Mixing and testing our own combinations proved fruitful but also resulted in losses to HBHS 19-41 and RBHS 14-24 but saw us winning against Papamoa 41-0 and Rototuna 59-0.
Day two was knock-out and a very tight quarter-final was reliant on a last second, length of the field run by Ollie Anderson (Year 11, Greenbank) to score between the posts and ensure a 14-12 win over New Plymouth Boy’s High School.
The semi-final was against home-town favourites Hamilton Boy’s. After being rather bullied by them on day one, we starved them of ball, tackled their big men and were 25-0 up with a minute to go. The silence from the hundreds of supporters was deafening 😊.
The final was a very tight affair and could have gone either way, but Rotorua were the eventual winners.
Thank you to our coach Lucky Smythe for his expertise and support, as well as Sarah Fanuatanu for her care and patch up work - due to the field being artificial turf, there were some war wounds!
