On Tuesday 28 April we were lucky enough to welcome the Red Leap Theatre company to the school to lead a 4-hour devising workshop with our senior drama students. Red Leap is a devising theatre company, “dedicated to innovating theatrical form through the intersection of dynamic physicality, arresting imagery, and inventive original storytelling". To devise is to create an original piece of theatre from scratch based on a stimulus, all senior drama students must learn this skill for assessment.
Throughout the workshop, students explored a range of physical theatre techniques and collaborative storytelling exercises designed to challenge their creativity and confidence. The Red Leap facilitator encouraged students to think beyond traditional scripts, using movement, improvisation and gesture to create original dramatic work.
Students worked in small groups to devise short performance pieces, experimenting with landscapes, archetypes, character, space and symbolism. The workshop gave them insight into the professional devising process and highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication and creative risk-taking in theatre-making.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and embraced the opportunity to learn from such accomplished practitioners. It was inspiring to see their willingness to step outside their comfort zones with enthusiasm. We are incredibly grateful to Red Leap Theatre Company for sharing their expertise and passion with our students, and we look forward to seeing these new skills and ideas reflected in their future performance work.
