Velodrome Cambridge

Physical Education Sport Science Field Trip

Thursday 6 August 2026

Our Year 11 Physical Education NCEA and CIE students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational Sport Science field trip to the University of Waikato and the Cambridge Velodrome.

The day began at the University of Waikato where students gained an insight into the world of sport and exercise science. They took part in a series of practical laboratory sessions, including VO₂ max testing, Wingate anaerobic power testing on Wattbikes, and Skill Acquisition specialised tasks. These hands-on experiences allowed students to connect the scientific concepts studied in the classroom with real-world applications used by elite athletes and researchers.

Students were also experience riding on New Zealand's world-class indoor cycling track in the impressive indoor Velodrome. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, students developed their track cycling skills while learning about the physical and technical demands of high-performance cycling.

The trip provided an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and athlete performance, while also exposing them to potential academic pathways in sport science and related careers. It was an engaging and memorable day that brought classroom learning to life.
