Philips Society May 2025

Phillips Society Update

Wednesday 21 May 2025

The Phillips Society has had a strong and insightful start to 2025, continuing to bridge students and real-world professionals across business, innovation, and global education.

In Term 1, we were privileged to host Martin Walsh, former Assistant Dean of Admissions at Stanford University in the USA. Martin provided an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look into top-tier university admissions, offering real insight into what world-class institutions look for in future students. More than just tips and strategy, Martin challenged students to think deeply about authenticity, intellectual character, and impact - making his visit one of the most empowering conversations of the year.

We also had the honour of welcoming Dame Pieter Stewart, founder of New Zealand Fashion Week and a pioneering force in Aotearoa’s creative industries. Her discussion explored leadership in business, and the importance of uplifting New Zealand design on the global stage. Dame Pieter’s journey was a reminder that innovation often begins with courage - and a refusal to follow the status quo.

This term, Phillips Society members have been lucky enough to attend the KCOCA Business Breakfast, hearing from two exceptional Old Collegians. Kate Gatfield-Jeffries (Middlemore, 2015–16), co-founder of Moodi Blends, shared her journey creating a brand centred on functional and mental well-being. Her insights into building a purpose-led company that bridges health and branding were both grounded and forward-thinking.

Saurav Bansal (Greenbank, 2012–16), Founder of GAIT Technology, shared his journey to becoming founder and CEO of an environmental private equity firm, focused on high-quality climate investment, advisory, and technology. Saurav offered a compelling look into the world of sustainability finance, showing how data, tech, and impact can come together to build a better future.

From Silicon Valley to start-up ventures here in Aotearoa, these experiences have reinforced the Society’s goal: to push King’s College students to think globally, lead locally, and act boldly.
