On Tuesday 2 September, the Phillip’s Society was privileged to host Claire Sullivan Kraus, founder and owner of Denizen magazine, at King’s College. Presenting in the Toi Manawa Flanagan Theatre, Claire shared her journey as a businesswoman, editor, and entrepreneur, as well as the story behind one of New Zealand’s most influential lifestyle publications.
Originally from Canterbury, Claire began studying dentistry before realising her true passions lay elsewhere. She emphasised the importance of gaining real-life work experience to discover where your passion and skills lie, and to uncover talents you may not know you possess.
Claire’s strong communication and persuasive abilities helped her secure a role in advertising at TV3, where her talent quickly became clear. She says, "recognising your own future potential, and acting on it, is key!" By the age of 22, she was already earning more than the CEO of TV3. Her advice to students was simple but powerful: “Have the confidence to throw yourself in the deep end.” For her, that meant a bold move to New York.
Once there, she found herself immersed in the fast-paced world of media and entertainment. Through networking and conversation, she secured a position at Manhattan File, working alongside high-profile figures including Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
In 2005, Claire returned to New Zealand bringing her inspiration from New York back with her. Her vision was to bring the same energy and sense of pride that New Yorkers had for their city, to Auckland. What began as a weekly blog-style newsletter shared with 200 friends quickly grew to 10,000 subscribers. Within a year, the project went to print, and Denizen was born.
Claire’s story was an inspiring reminder of the value of resilience, confidence, and pursuing opportunities wherever they arise. Her visit left the audience motivated to embrace uncertainty and follow their passions with courage.
