Media Studies Students Explore Industry Pathways

Wednesday 13 May 2026

Year 12 Media Studies students from both Cambridge and NCEA classes recently had an exciting opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the media industry in action. The day began with a visit to Auckland University of Technology (AUT), where students participated in a live television studio experience. Taking on a range of professional roles including director, presenters, vision mixer, graphics operator, sound and camera crew. This hands-on experience allowed them to understand the level of coordination, technical skill, and teamwork required to bring a live broadcast together. Students also explored various tertiary pathways and career opportunities within the media industry, helping them to make connections between their current studies and future possibilities.

Following a well-earned pizza lunch, the group visited Wētā Unleashed for an inspiring behind-the-scenes tour of film production. Students were immersed in the creative processes that bring stories to life, learning about artwork, sculpting, design, mechatronics, props, costuming, and world-building. The experience highlighted the incredible range of roles involved in screen production and showcased the innovation and craftsmanship behind the industry. This memorable day has provided students with fresh inspiration and practical knowledge, which they will now bring into their own production work back in the classroom.
