Media Studies Screening Night

Thursday 28 August 2025

What a night to remember!

Our annual Media Studies Screening was pure Hollywood magic, complete with a red-carpet welcome, flashing cameras, and guests dressed as their favourite movie characters. The evening was a spectacular celebration of the creativity and dedication of our Year 11, 12, and 13 students, who proudly showcased their Cambridge and NCEA coursework on the big screen.

For the first time, the showcase was held at Toi Manawa (instead of Hoyts Cinema), and the foyer was transformed into a glittering, movie-themed wonderland that set the scene for a special night.

Adding to the excitement, we welcomed our panel of outside judges: Zane Carnie (filmmaker, director, editor, and our talented Artist in Residence) and Marco McGill (Marsden, 2022-23), one of our Old Collegians currently studying at AFTRS in Sydney.

The event was brilliantly hosted by our MCs, Cowboy Ken - Myles Westbury (Year 12,Peart) and Captain Jack Sparrow - Oliver Finnegan (Year 12, Peart) who brought the house down with witty one-liners, quick-fire media quizzes, and plenty of spot prizes for our audience members who were brave enough to shout out the 'right' answers. Their energy and humour kept the night flowing and made sure everyone felt part of the celebration.

Of course, the highlight was seeing our students’ films come to life on the big screen. Each piece reflected countless hours of hard work, creativity, and collaboration — proof of the outstanding talent we have in Media Studies.

We are also proud to announce some of the top Media Awards of the night, recognising excellence and innovation across year levels:

  • Top Documentary (Level 3): How Is He Still Here? By Emilio Nooyen (Year 13, Marsden)
  • Top Short film (Level 2): Tide to the Soul – By Frankie Faulkner (Year 12, Taylor), Elizabeth Walker (Year 12, Marion Bruce), Elodie Hunt (Year 12, Taylor)
  • Top Music Video (Level 2): Close to You – By Theo Boland (Year 12, Major)
  • Top Film Opening (AS CAIE): Blink of Baku – Jozef Bycroft-Divett (Year 12, Marsden), Thornton Wallberg (Year 12, Marsden)
  • Top Advertisement (Year 11): Valentino – by Noah McLaughlin (Year 11, Selwyn)
  • Top Upcoming Filmmaker (Year 11): DJI – by Jamie Ye (Year 11, Greenbank)

It was a truly spectacular evening that celebrated not only student achievement but also the growing strength of our Media Studies programme. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the night possible — our students, judges, MCs, staff, and whānau.

Roll on next year’s screening night!
