King's College Girls First XI 1 - 0 Saint Kentigern College
Our Girls First XI secured a hard-fought victory this week, though the match proved to be a far more demanding contest than initially anticipated. Slated to play the Saint Kentigern College Second XI, it was glaringly apparent from the opening whistle that we were facing a vastly different line-up from the side we had comfortably defeated earlier in the season. Bolstered by the addition of several highly talented players, the opposition presented a formidable challenge that forced our girls to earn every inch of the pitch.
Captain Phoebe Wood (Year 13, Marion Bruce) won the toss and made the calculated decision to play into the sun for the first half. The first half also marked the highly anticipated return of vice-captain Emily Stanton (Year 13, Taylor) following a season-long injury. Stanton looked immediately dangerous in possession on the left flank, consistently beating her markers and injecting pace into our attack. Unfortunately, her triumphant return was cut short at the 20-minute mark when she had to be substituted off due to an asthma attack. We wish her a swift recovery and commend the immediate impact she had while on the field.
Despite the unexpected strength of the opposition and the sudden loss of Stanton, King's College managed to break the deadlock. A crucial strike from Ruby Whyte (Year 11, Middlemore) secured a solitary goal in the first half, which ultimately proved to be the only score of the match and the deciding factor in our victory.
Protecting a 1-0 lead requires immense discipline, and the squad delivered on all fronts:
- The team functioned exceptionally well as a cohesive unit. The girls showed great maturity in protecting the ball in possession and displayed immense grit in fighting to win it back during turnovers.
- Our backline was absolutely resolute. Carys Walters (Year 12, Marion Bruce) anchored the defence at centre back with a masterful performance. Her tireless work rate, critical tackles, and organisation earned her a highly deserved Player of the Day award.
- As a testament to our midfield's work rate and the defensive wall built in front of her, goalkeeper Lily Rupapera (Year 12, Marion Bruce) enjoyed a remarkably quiet fixture. She was only required to retrieve the ball for a goal kick twice throughout the entire match!
While the opposition may have unexpectedly stacked their ranks, our team rose to the occasion with tenacity and tactical discipline. This gritty 1-0 win successfully books our ticket to the group final, where we will face off against Lynfield College at home this Wednesday at 4pm.
