On Friday night, our First XI boys football team played Sacred Heart away at Bill McKinlay Park in what ended up being a highly contested game, with our boys holding a high percentage of ball possession.
In the 20th minute, Sacred Heart played an impressive sequence of tiki-taka through the centre of the pitch to go up 0-1. However, our midfield duo of Josh Motion (Year 13, Parnell) and Henry Artrip (Year 12, Peart) - who cumulatively ran a combined 23km during the match - won a large number of duels to set up chances for our attack.
Our equalizer came after Kalani Mowbray (Year 10, Selwyn) drew a foul at the left edge of the box. From the resulting free kick, Lucca Stredder (Year 13, Parnell) slotted a beautiful shot into the top-left corner to make it 1-1.
We carried that momentum into the second half, with slick defending preventing Sacred Heart from playing beyond their attacking third. However, against the run of play, a counter attack saw Sacred Heart convert from a corner taking the lead with 10 minutes to go.
The final score was 1-2. While a narrow defeat, it represents major progress against a side we lost 0-6 to in the reverse fixture a couple of months ago.
Thanks to unexpected losses from some higher ranked teams, we remain firmly in the mix for a top 3 finish.
The boys now look to take on Rosmini College at Ashley Reserve on Friday night.
