On Thursday 11 September, 19 of our Year 11 and Year 12 students sat the first stage of the Chemistry Olympiad exam. This exam is for exceptional students who are looking to challenge themselves and their Chemistry knowledge. This is the first stage in the International Chemistry Olympiad programme, and students who are awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze award are eligible to complete the training program and advance to the next stage…
This can result in competing in the New Zealand Chemistry Olympiad Team, against other students around the world. The Gold award is awarded to the top 10% of students in Aotearoa, with Silver being awarded to the next 20% and Bronze to the next 30%.
Three students were awarded a Gold award: Angus Birchenough (Year 12, Marsden), Johan Chan (Year 12, Greenbank) and Harrison Wong (Year 11, Marsden).
Nine students were awarded a Silver award: Evee Tan (Year 12, Taylor), Ethan Ye (Year 11, Parnell), James Barrington (Year 12, Greenbank), Jack Chen (Year 11, Greenbank), Chanwoo Eo (Year 12, Selwyn), Brendan Lian (Year 12, Peart), Hamish Patel-Smith (Year 12, Averill), Ethan Sheng (Year 11, Major) and Ethan van Brink (Year 12, Marsden).
Four students were award Bronze awards: Enay Bengali (Year 12, Marsden), Ryan Qiu (Year 11, Marsden), Sebastian Segers (Year 11, Parnell) and Betty Yao (Year 12, Taylor).
