On Tuesday this week, 14 Design and Build students, Technology teacher Ged Leicester and capable and trustworthy driver Simon Lamb set off from the College to deliver four student-designed and made picnic tables to Waterview Primary School. Arriving at the school, the King’s students were welcomed by Principal of Waterview Brett Skeen, Office Manager Vera Taulealea, Caretaker Ziggy Henry and Waterview Parent Representative Wayne Ross.
After the four tables were unloaded from the King’s trailer, our students and teachers were treated to the children singing their school waiata in beautiful loud voices, earning a round of applause from the King’s audience. After the formalities, the Waterview children were then allowed to try out the tables and squeezed onto them for a photo for their own school newsleter.
These tables are sturdy and well-made. They are made of macrocarpa wood which is known for its natural durability and resistance to rot and insects. They have also been designed with rounded edges to reduce any chance of accidents or children scratching or hurting themselves on them.
This donation means a lot to Waterview School – they will provide a space for children to work, chat, socialise and eat in groups outside. Due to recent wet weather, the tables aren’t on the grassy field just yet, but once spring approaches, they will be positioned on the grass for the children to enjoy.
Before the King’s students left Waterview School, Wayne reiterated his gratitude as a parent and highlighted how lucky the students are to have such practical skills – skills that will hopefully be appreciated by the Waterview students for many years to come as they make use of their new beautifully made outdoor seating.
