It has been a busy and exciting term for our dance students, with several performance and learning opportunities. Our dancers recently travelled to the Project Hip Hop Competition at Baypark Arena in Tauranga, taking two teams: FLEET, our Mega Crew made up of 21 students, and KLUTCH, a smaller crew of 11 students. Both groups, choreographed by Alex Paige and led by Amelie Tapper (Year 13, Middlemore), enjoyed the opportunity to perform their competition pieces for the first time.
At the National Dance Challenge, held at Westlake Girls High School, we entered both FLEET, our hip hop Mega Crew choreographed by Alex Paige, and our contemporary group, choreographed by Kisha September and led by Arabella Morgan (Year 13, Marion Bruce). We are proud to share that FLEET received a Challenger High Gold Award, while the contemporary group earned a Challenger Gold Award.
Recently, our Level 2 and 3 NCEA Dance students also enjoyed a visit from Unitec, where nine tertiary dance students presented an inspiring 18-minute contemporary performance. Following the show, our Year 12 and 13 students took part in a collaborative workshop, developing their choreographic skills alongside the Unitec performers.
Save the Date: Our annual Dance Show is coming up in Term 3 and will be held at Toi Manawa on Wednesday 5 August and Thursday 6 August. We look forward to sharing the incredible work our students have been creating.
