On the sunny lunchtime of Wednesday 10 June, King’s held a novel yet highly successful Club Fair display. More than a dozen stalls packed around the tuckshop from a selection of co-curricular clubs on offer at the College. Each stall was colourfully adorned and run by student club leaders showcasing the remarkable breadth of co-curricular life at King's.
The Club Fair was a festive jewel in the middle of this term’s prefect-led King’s Week. This was our school spirit initiative rallying behind our First XV Rugby team leading up to their game against Auckland Grammar School by celebrating All Things King’s - from our school haka to school chanting to hearing about Dan Carter’s journey as a world-class athlete. The Club Fair showcased them all.
Students weaved between stalls, attempting to name a plethora of instruments from the orchestra, fact check their worldly knowledge with the Democratic Society, trying their hand at chopstick skills in exchange for an Asian snack from our Asia Committee and go up against the school’s top Premier Advanced debaters on the most spirited moots. Our Chess Club offered cupcakes to victorious challengers, while VEX Robotics challenged students to code a robot through a maze among so many more exciting tasks. All these activities were tied together through a bingo game with those completing activities entered into a raffle draw.
The atmosphere was everything a great lunchtime should be. Students had the leisure to buzz around the busy tuckshop area with Mr Whippy ice creams in hand, entertained by live music from student band Sasquatch while they enrolled in niche termly clubs.
What made this event even more special was that this was entirely student organised. As the lead behind the Student Advisory Panel team that brought the Club Fair to life, I am proud to say this event went all too well as the first one we've hosted.
We have taken the liberty of university club advertising into King’s and celebrated just how immersive King’s life can be however you choose. Perhaps the most fitting endorsement came from David Li (Peart, 2021-24), a visiting Old Collegian remarked to me that lunchtime: "This is the most University of Pennsylvania thing ever” - we might have hit a mark.
The Club Fair has well and truly earned its place in the King’s calendar and I hope to see it return with even more fervour in years to come. This was spirit week at its finest: a delightful experience enunciating just how rich, immersive and exciting life at the College can be.
