As we come to the close of our autumn term, I cannot help but feel immensely grateful for all that has gone on in this past week.
Our Premier Theatresports team enjoyed a rare win over Auckland Grammar School - ‘rare’ because we haven’t played them in the last ten years! - and our annual Runathon turned out to be one of the most memorable on record.
On a picture-perfect day, with not a cloud in the sky, a huge number of students donned an assortment of Runathon singlets – past and present, and proceeded to run, walk and row to raise funds for the charity Alongsiders’ International.
This year’s singlet design, created by Rymer Brooke (Year 12, Taylor) (pictured) carried something of a fiery-Phoenix in King’s colours, rising from the ashes, and that is precisely what Alongsiders International seeks to do as they get alongside some of the most needy children on the plant, to provide mentoring, support and hope for children who live on the streets and slums of some of the world’s most deprived communities.
It is heartening to see our student-body see the importance of raising funds for such need by purchasing singlets and collecting sponsorships. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, and a even bigger congratulations to all the students who took part. There were some incredible distances run, not least Hugo Velvin (Year 13, St John’s) who chalked up another incredible effort, on the back of two half-marathons, over two previous years, and ran just shy of 37km. What is even more heartening is the effort Hugo is putting into gathering up all his sponsorship. So, now comes the vitally important part, as we support our rangitahi to finish the ‘race’ and collect the funds in to ensure they reach their destination…

Jammies in June… Week 11
As we head into our last week of term, we would love to invite donations of pyjamas and sleepwear, for our Jammies for June fundraiser. This has been promoted through the Houses – initiated by Kate Bell (Year 12) from Middlemore House. All students/families are invited to bring in a brand-new set of pyjamas (sizes 00 to size 18) and they can receive community service hours for doing so. These pyjamas which will be collected in each House, will then be gathered up on Friday 3 July and taken to the Middlemore Foundation, the charitable wing of Middlemore Hospital. Thank you so much.
Thank you…
Also, last weekend saw the final Term 2 Sunday Chapel Service. The Chaplaincy want to convey a huge thank you to all the students and their family members that have attended these services. The Chapel Choir – and other King’s Choirs that have sung during our services have offered a collection of beautiful choral pieces that have provided space for reflection and meditation. A sincere thank you to Matua Steven Rapana, Rachel Alexander-Sutherland and Nicholas Forbes for their musical leadership and guidance. Also, a heartfelt thanks goes to the students involved in the service and to Max Masters who offered us a very thoughtful engaging homily on the ‘maps’ we rely upon as we seek to help our students navigate this complex thing we call life.
Have a blessed Term 2 holiday break - may you be refreshed and restored for an important Term 3 of focused study.
