King's College Boys First XI 5 - 0 Rosmini College
After two impressive performances on the bounce that didn't give us our just rewards, the King's boys put in arguably their performance of the season with a 5-1 victory over Rosmini.
A cagey start saw King's slow out of the blocks, with neither team really threatening one another. However, after the 20-minute mark, it was all King's. Free-flowing football, relentless energy in the press, and chances started to come thick and fast.
The scoring was finally opened when Henry Artrip (Year 12, Peart) won the ball back high up the pitch and, via a deflected clearance, the ball found its way into the back of the net. It was a deserved reward for a strong first-half performance that saw us go into the half time break with a 1-0 lead.
There was no let-up from King's as they came out and dominated from the outset of the second half, determined to build on their one-goal advantage. The second goal came after some great work down the flank allowed Dylan Naicker (Year 13, Parnell) to slide the ball through to Josh Motion (Year 13, Parnell), whose cut-back found the feet of Kalani Mowbray (Year 10, Selwyn). Kalani slotted home first time to open his account for King's College.
Shortly after came another first goal in King's colours, this time through some excellent pressing that allowed Charlie Holdsworth (Year 12, Selwyn) to win the ball back before calmly finishing into the bottom corner. The fourth came after MVP Lucca Stredder's (Year 13, Parnell) free kick was diverted into the Rosmini net by one of their own defenders.
A consolation goal for Rosmini was never enough to mount a serious comeback before Lucca Stredder truly put the game to bed with a sublime volley from the edge of the box.
It was an almost perfect performance from the team at a crucial stage of the season. With a Knockout Cup semi-final, Auckland Grammar, and Tournament Week all coming up over the next three weeks, this was exactly the performance we were looking for.
A special mention also to our Girls First XI who advanced to the Plate Final after a hard fought 1-0 victory vs St Kent’s Second XI. They will face off against Lynfield College at home at 4pm on Wednesday!
