On Friday 16 October, 16 courageous students set off to create a bit of King’s College history by competing in the Championship Division of the Auckland Rugby Sevens competition. After a few weeks of preparation, this group, many of whom were new to rugby, represented the College with exemplary pride.
Following a late change during the week, the event was moved to Waitematā Rugby Club. King’s were drawn against Papatoetoe High School, Baradene College and Botany Downs Secondary College. With Botany Downs forfeiting on the day, the girls were left with only two games to play.
The first game was against a strong Papatoetoe High School side, who had competed in the Auckland 10s competition during the year. Understandably, the girls processed some early nerves, competed phenomenally and left a lasting impression on the spectators, going down at a narrow 21–15. Tries were scored by Aria Fuller (Year 13, Middlemore) (2) and Micah Fuller (Year 11, Middlemore).
The second game was against Baradene College on the No. 1 field. It was a great contest that went back and forth, but the Fuller sisters proved the difference, with Aria scoring a hat-trick and Micah adding a try to secure King’s first win, 20–10!
It was a great day, where the girls showed incredible heart, skill and determination. The team were a real credit to the school, showing outstanding sporting ability on the field and representing the College incredibly well.
A big thank you to the Year 13 girls who took the initiative to drive this campaign, and well done to all the new-to-rugby players for being courageous and giving it a go. There is clearly some untapped potential here, which may lead to future teams competing in this space.
