Boarding staff
Each boarding House has a team of people working together to make the boarding experience safe and enjoyable. These are the key people that boarders will encounter:
- Housemaster: The person responsible for the pastoral care and academic progress of all students in the House. They are also teachers within the College.
- Boarding House Tutors: These are the people involved in direct supervision of boarders during the week and weekends, helping with planned activities and excursions (not academic tutors).
- House Manager: The person responsible for the health and wellbeing of boarders as well as the efficient functioning of the House.
- Teacher Mentors: These are the people responsible for all schooling matters for the students in their Mentor group. Students meet with them regularly to discuss their academic progress.
- Prefects: These Year 13 students help with the running of the House, under the supervision of the Housemaster and Mentors.
Whānau communication
The King's boarding staff understand the importance of clear and regular communication with home. Regular channels include:
- A regular Weekly Newsletter and Week Ahead email from the Housemaster to all parents. This is parents’ primary source of information and is designed specifically to keep parents up to date on all significant events within the House.
- Personal phone calls or emails from the Housemaster if your child requires individual support, acknowledgement or is causing concern within the Boarding house or College.
- Invitations to attend events such as pre-Chapel drinks and nibbles, suppers, or special House events.
- An e-news bulletin with important information. You can check the website for calendar dates, updated information and notification of events that are of interest to parents.
It is vital that parents contact the school with any changes in contact details (including Auckland Base Guardian details if applicable), to notify of any special considerations or issues which might affect our ability to care for your child or their boarding experience. All leave requests should be logged in Orah, and the attendance officer should be notified of any class absences.
Whānau members wishing to contact the House during the day should first try the House Manager, as the Housemaster and Tutors will likely be occupied with teaching. Any parcels delivered during the day can be taken to the main office.
Chapel
King's College is solidly based on the Anglican tradition. Our chaplaincy team provides a ministry of support for students and creates opportunities for students to be involved in worship, pastoral care, class-based learning and community service.
The Memorial Chapel is the heart of the College. There is a boarders' chapel service on Monday mornings and a compulsory Sunday evening service once a term.
Meals
The dedicated kitchen staff create quality, nourishing, and delicious food to feed the boarding community. Meals are served in the Dining Hall: cooked breakfasts and dinners and a variety of hot and cold lunches.
Students are expected to attend all meals except by prior arrangement with a member of the Boarding staff, coach, or teacher in charge of the activity. They are also expected to wear uniform to all meals except pre-arranged mufti meals. Special dietary requirements can normally be catered for if we are notified of them.
Leave
Leave is granted to boarding students at the discretion of the Housemaster, and they will act in the best interests of the student. Absence from school and absence from boarding are two separate arrangements and both must be completed through Schoolbox and Orah respectively.
It is important that students apply for leave well in advance and through the correct channels. The Boarding staff are strict around this issue, as it is their responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students—which includes knowing where they are at all times. Weekend scheduling is also reliant on accurate numbers.
More information about boarding at King's can be found in the Boarding Handbook.
