King's College grounds

From the Headmaster - 5 June

Thursday 5 June 2025

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

As we come out of the King’s Birthday long weekend, it feels as though this milestone signals how fast the year is travelling. We now have only four weeks left of the term and of these, only two weeks will be the full five days with Matariki to come. For most senior students, there is only one term left before they depart to the final examination season for the year, especially those sitting the Cambridge International Examinations. We are also now well over halfway through our curriculum programmes.

I have taken this opportunity to remind all students of how important this stage of the year is. I have also encouraged all Year 13 students to be well ahead of what university requirements they may need, depending on where they are looking to apply. That’s not to say they must be decided on a single opportunity, but rather I am encouraging them to keep their options open by making sure they are aware of the requirements needed for all their options. I have also been encouraging Year 11 and Year 12 students to be aware of university and course requirements, which may drive their subject selections next year and beyond.

Our Careers Department are well versed on the requirements for all universities and the courses they offer, both in New Zealand and around the world. Riki Apa is always available to students, and he appreciates them making early contact with him as this enables controlled discussion - time is the greatest advantage when students are considering their options for the future. His email is r.apa@kingscollege.school.nz if you want to get in touch with him directly. It’s a good time to be thinking and planning ahead.

The College has been appreciating the students and their engagement in the Best All Round Education in recent months. There are so many co-curricular activities, academic requirements and House events for our students to participate in, a real feature of a King's College education. This will be something we highlight this weekend when we are holding an Open Day for the College. It will be held this Sunday 8 June at 11am - if you have any friends, family or acquaintances who might be thinking about King's College in the future we would love to see them there. They can register on our website here. At the time of writing, we have almost 500 people registered already, so are very pleased with the interest.

There have been a few students and parents who have expressed interest in me running another study session. As the pressure mounts, I will include time management in any session. If this interests you or your children, please let me know via email -  s.lamb@kingscollege.school.nz. I’ll schedule a session prior to the end of the term for anyone who would like to attend to get some study tips and advice.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the College. I am always available at the email address above if you’re not sure who to contact in the first instance.

Kind regards,

Simon Lamb
