John Canning Dove attended King’s from 1910 to 1916 and was a prefect and editor of the Collegian. During his first year of medical school in 1917, he enlisted to fight in the Great War serving as Lance Corporal in the 4th Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. After only four weeks serving on the front line, he was killed in France on the 26th of October 1918, just 16 days before the end of the war.

John wrote home regularly, this collection documents his time in the New Zealand Army camp, time at sea, in Egypt, in the Brocton Military Camp in England and on the front line in France. The collection also contains photographs, letters of condolence to his family, as well as returned letters from the Dead Letter Office. Help us transcribe his letters.
