Adjudicator, Professor Anthony Ritchie from Otago University, had the following comments for Kayo’s piece:

“‘Before the Credits’ (by Kayo Takamatsu) shows a remarkable maturity for this age group. Beautifully scored for oboe and string trio, this piece is lyrical and expressive with a strong sense of melodic line. It has a wistful quality that is nicely informed by the programme note."

Professor Ritchie also comments on Marcus’ piece:

“This piece has a well-defined character, with strong melodic ideas in waltz time, and a good variety of chamber music textures on offer. You write well for the instruments, with everyone having meaningful roles and challenges.”

Both students composed Oboe Quartets which were performed and recorded by The Mondano Quartet when they visited the College for a work shop last week.

Marcus’s chamber group, ‘Sputnik The Oktet’ has also made it through to the national finals for the NZ Chamber Music Competition, which take place in Christchurch at the start of August.
