Finn Matheson (Marsden, Year 10) recently participated in the 2017 Archery New Zealand Outdoor National Championships in Trentham in January, competing in the Cadet (Under 18) Division – an achievement in itself considering his relatively young age of 14.
Despite no medals being won, he performed extremely well, with the highlight being his match against the Oceania Champion in the Matchplay on the final day. Finn was the only competitor who took an end off the final winner of the competition.
In the Auckland Regional Championship this weekend Finn’s results were also outstanding. It was weekend of personal bests with Finn scoring his first perfect end.
Finn won the Intermediate Men’s Division and placed 2nd out of all archers in all divisions for the entire tournament and only 26 points behind the eventual winner, Chayse Martin-Roberts.
Teacher in Charge of Archery, Barbara Law is extremely impressed with the level of skill that Finn possesses for his age and is excited to see what the future will hold for the young archer.
“This was an amazing result for a 14 year old with only 18 months experience. Finn has that rare combination of talent and absolute focus. We are looking forward to his success in the King’s A Team this term.”
Finn is currently the Intermediate Men’s National Indoor Matchplay Champion, Intermediate Men’s Auckland Regional Indoor Champion, Intermediate Men’s Auckland Club Indoor Champion and now the Auckland Regional Intermediate Men’s Outdoor Champion.
