Tuesday 17 November 2015

On Saturday, 14 November the King’s rowers travelled to Lake Karapiro for the season’s first 2000m hit-out: the Spring Regatta.

Representing King’s were an Under-18 Single, an Under-17 Eight, an Under-16 Eight, an Under-17 Double, Girls' Double and two Under-15 Octuples.

The Regatta had an unusual format. All 130 crews first competed in a time trial over 1900m. On the basis of that, they were seeded into 14 semi-finals, based exclusively on time and irrespective of boat class. For the final race, the top two crews in each semi-final were promoted up one level while the bottom two crews were demoted.

All crews demonstrated good form over the distance. Detailed results have not as yet been published, however some highlights include:

  • Under-15 Octuple - No. 1 – fastest octuple on the water
  • Under-17 Eight – fastest school crew in the ‘finals’ round
  • Under-17 Double (James Johnstone and Billy Coman) winning their semi-final
  • Under-18 Single (Oliver Maclean) holding his own in both the semi-final and final against eights and quads!

So, another very encouraging set of performances, vindicating our solid preparation thus far and continued attention to detail.

This week we head back to Lake Pupuke for the Bennett Shield Regatta.
