The first semi-final saw the Peart Panthers face the Selwyn Savages. Peart had previously achieved a penalty shootout victory to reach the semi-finals and faced tough competition from the multiple international athletes in Selwyn, including star performer from Serbia, Vuk Bulajic (Year 13, Selwyn).
After multiple rapid plays and a few quick breaks Peart were well and truly defeated as Selwyn took the win, 9-0.
Next up saw the Greenbank Gropers take on the School House Sharks. This game featured a lot of excitement with fouls, clever passing, excellent goalkeeping and some outstanding play by Brooke Varney (Year 12, Middlemore). Unfortunately, the only thing it did not feature was goals, with the score tied at 1-1 for most of the game. After a sudden victory penalty shootout, the Sharks of School House came away with the win, 2-1.
After a short interval Selwyn and School House arrived back for their second game of the day, this time playing in the final. The game showcased some excellent defence with the score tied for most of the duration, however Selwyn managed to claim the victory in the final minutes. After a great fight from both teams Selwyn were declared the winners with the final score 3-2.
Head of Aquatics Jim Floerchinger was thrilled with the large number of supporters who braved the wind and rain to watch the tournament and also the great attitude from the players.
“It was an entertaining event and we are all thrilled with the level of play and enthusiasm from the athletes,” says Jim.
“Bring on next year.”
