Our King’s sailing team competed in the Auckland Teams Racing Cup on Thursday 30 and Friday 31 March, gaining bronze in what was a close battle amongst the top four teams.

Our team performed well on Thursday beating the eventual winners Kristin School in the Round Robin. Kristin and King’s were placed first on points at the end of the first-Round Robin, followed by Auckland Grammar School and Westlake Boys High School who were tied for second.

Friday’s weather made for difficult racing across the board and resulted in a five-way tie for second in the round robin two. King’s placed fourth at the end of the two round robins, meaning they would race against Kristin in a semi-final. Despite a promising start in which King’s led until the last 100 metres, shifting winds and some great sailing by Kristin meant our team lost in what was a nail biter.

The 3rd/4th sail off was against Auckland Grammar, where King’s held off the competition and won the race to take home the Bronze medal.

Teacher in charge of Sailing Bryan Sapsworth says the team performed above their expectations.

“Our group worked well together, and the leadership from Jordan Stevenson kept them together and focused after some agonisingly close races. It was a great effort from the whole team.”

Their next competition is the 2017 Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championship, which runs from 22 April -28 April.
