On Saturday, 16 May the Burtones competed in the Smokefree Rockquest Manukau Heats against 24 other bands from around the region and successfully made it through to the Manukau Finals.

The stage was brightly lit as the band walked out from behind the curtains, dressed up in suits and a skirt, ready to perform their original song The Movement, which talks about using music as a way to escape the circumstances that people are faced with. The song gradually builds, starting with soft keys, adding additional instruments and voices until the entire 10 piece band pulls together to attack the audience with a powerful reggae beat.

The three judges gave the band a combined score of 43 out of a possible 45 points as well as a lot of positive comments including that they thought we had “nailed it” and that they loved our performance.

Twelve bands have been selected for the Manukau Finals and will compete on Saturday, 13 June at the Dorothy Winstone Centre at Auckland Girls' Grammar School. The top two groups from this Final are then able to submit a video performance for consideration for the National Final.
