Saving his best for last, Ryan Fox carded a five-under 67 on the final round.
Impressive for the 28-year-old's first appearance at a golf major, he finished four-under for the tournament; 11 shots adrift of leaders Zach Johnson (United States), Marc Lieshman (Australia) and Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa).
As the first pairing, with German veteran Bernhard Langer, out on the St Andrews course in Scotland on the final day, Fox made the most of the benign conditions to shoot six birdies and just one bogey.
He surged 29 places from the foot of the scoreboard to eclipse some big names in the final tally. Langer could only manage even-par 72 on the final day.
Fox started with consecutive birdies and also picked up a shot at the ninth to turn in 33; his best effort over the front nine in the four rounds.
Fox then birdied the 10th, 13th and 18th holes; his only blot coming at the par-four 16th.
Pretty happy with his efforts, Fox says, "Great day at the open to finish. Played with Bernhard Langer. Fantastic guy and I had a nice 67 to top it off".
