King’s First XV experience narrow loss to Mount Albert Grammar School

030717 Kings Rugby The Wrap Up Saturday 1 July

Despite dominating the field and scoring two great tries, the First XV went down in the last minutes of their match to lose 12-13 to Mount Albert Grammar School.

During the first half, the King’s First XV dominated the opposition in every facet of the game. Playing into a stiff breeze, the King's boys scored two well worked tries through Zoan Patua (Year 13, Averill) and Millenium Sanerivi(Year 12, St John’s). Meihana Grindlay (Year 11, School) added a difficult conversion from the sideline.

The second half saw Mount Albert Grammar School score two easy tries and with the score at 12-10, King’s unfortunately gave away a penalty, which was duly converted by Mount Albert Grammar School who closed the match winning 12-13.

The result now means that the teams chance of making the semi-finals are reliant on results from other teams’ matches.

Full reports

First XV
Mount Albert Grammar School
12-13 to Mount Albert Grammar School
Tries: Zoan Patua, Millenium Sanerivi
Conversions: Meihana Grindlay

Despite dominating the field and scoring two great tries, the First XV went down in the last minutes of their match to lose 12-13 to Mount Albert Grammar School.

In difficult weather conditions, the team took control over the side from Mount Albert Grammar and dominated the opposition in every facet of the game. Playing into a stiff breeze, the King's boys scored two well worked tries through Zoan Patua and Millenium Sanerivi. Meihana Grindlay added a difficult conversion from the sideline, but a missed conversion from in front of the posts would later prove very costly.

In the second half confidence was high given the team had the wind at their back. Unfortunately, an unforced error right from the restart gave Mount Albert Grammar the ball and they showed great patience to work through twenty plus phases of pick and drive to score in the corner. Another mistake from the kick-off meant that Mount Albert Grammar were once again rewarded scoring in the corner.

With the score at 12-10 in their favour, King's should have comfortably closed out the game, but unfortunately  Mount Albert Grammar secured attacking field position again and they were able to squeeze a penalty out, which they duly converted to go ahead 12-13.

King's had one last chance to mount an attack but Mount Albert Grammar repelled the challenge and the game was up.

The result now means that the teams chance of making the semi-finals are reliant on results from other teams’ matches.

Second XV
Sacred Heart College
8-10 to Sacred Heart College
Tries: Roanis Lamond
Penalties: Will Boyden

For the second weekend in a row the Second XV went down in the last few minutes, to suffer an agonisingly close loss. With multiple injuries across all of the senior teams, a patched up team showed great passion and commitment to run Sacred Heart College so close. Unfortunately they couldn't hold out for quite long enough and the opposition kicked a penalty with the last play of the match to win.

Colts
Otahuhu College Second XV
9-10 to Otahuhu College
Penalties: Campbell Mabin (3)

It was another tight game this week where the boys played an amazing game in trying conditions. After being down 0-7 in the first few minutes of the first half the boys clawed their way back to 9-7 at the break thanks to good line speed and defensive pressure on Otahuhu College. Campbell Mabin slotted three difficult penalties with a strong wind behind him.

Our forwards were led strongly by Jamie Kennelly, Amorangi Kuka and Sebastian Mines.

A late penalty awarded to Otahuhu College in front of the posts in the last second proved to be fatal. Player of the Day was Sebastian Mines who place an outstanding defensive game. We have a Wednesday away game next week versus Liston College at 4pm.

4th Grade
Mount Albert Grammar School
24-10 to King’s
Tries: William Yates, Max Doughty, Jared McKenzie, Alan Bentley

The 4th grade played against a determined Mount Albert Grammar School side. The King’s boys dominated the first half with the use of the very strong wind. William Yates, Max Doughty and Jared McKenzie scored in the first half to give us a well-deserved 17-0 half-time lead. The opposition gained some momentum in the second half to score two tries. Alan Bentley, however, cut through the defense to score under the posts to put the game beyond doubt.

5A
Rosmini College
22-22 draw

This game was a tough contest that saw the score see-saw between teams until Rosmini College took the lead. The King’s side fought back and kept up an attack for the final 5 minutes in their territory.

5B
Sacred Heart College
12-26 to Sacred Heart College

This was a frustrating game that was initially dominated by Sacred Heart College. It took the boys 45 minutes to overcome their heavy loss of the previous week and to play at their best. In the second half they managed to outscore their opponents but it was too late with the final score at 12-26.

6A
Sacred Heart College
83-0 to King’s
Tries: Stacey Numanga (2), Peter Whyte (2), Taigo Chapman (2), Tim Jones (2), Nathan Robinson, Sam Power, Harry Holdsworth, Maikel Tuala, Monty Hare
Conversions: Nathan Robinson (9)

King’s 6A took themselves over to Sacred Heart College this weekend to play the oppositions B team. Sacred Heart were good with the ball in hand, but the King’s side were devastating from turnover ball and scored 13 excellent tries in wet and windy conditions. The handling skills were sublime and decision-making from all of the players was phenomenal. Nathan Robinson turned in his performance of the season and pulled the strings beautifully behind a dominant pack. For the next match we farewell five players who leave on camp for the first four weeks of Term 3, so the rest of the team is going to have to make up for the big loss as we go into the Championship Pool. Congratulations to the team on an unbeaten Term of Rugby.

7th Grade
Orewa College
19-10 to King’s
Tries: Charles Rasmussen, Jack Proctor, Benjamin King
Conversions: Harry Sinclair (2)

After a disappointing display against Rosmini College last weekend, the 7th Grade team had a very good week. Due to a catch up game, they had to play two games in two days. On Thursday they played a must-win game against Westlake Boys High School. Despite trailing at halftime, the boys showed great determination in the second half to win 20-19. On Saturday the team travelled away to play against Orewa College. In difficult conditions the boys played some good rugby to win 19-10. These two results have cemented their position in the top five of the competition and will see the team play for a spot in the final next term.
