After making his T-20 debut against the same opposition in Term Four last year, Harry Sinclair made his full-debut (50 over match) against them over the weekend. It turned out to a memorable one for the left-handed opener who ground his way to a well-deserved century, the first one for King’s since Dimithri Gallage’s innings against St Kentigern College in December 2019.

Sinclair and Achindra Molamure put on an opening stand of 146 runs in the 27th overs before the latter lost his wicket soon after registering a patient and fluent half-century. Muhammad Abbas was sent in ahead of the designated ‘first-drop’ and he lost his wicket just as he was beginning to take full command of the bowling, having scored 39 at a strike rate nudging 100.

When Sinclair was dismissed for 108 (144 balls), another debutant, Josh Olliver joined Abbas. These two tried to score of every ball with quick singles and effortless 2’s. Olliver was joined by Karl Wallace (another debutant at this format) and the pair continued in the same vein. A clump of wickets fell as the push for runs became a priority and Patrick Maher was promoted up the order. He did not disappoint with 24 runs, off 15 balls. At the end of the innings King’s had reached a comfortable 284 runs but should have been disappointed with this total as 320-plus was a strong possibility at the 30 over mark.

St Peter’s showed no intent of chasing down this total from the outset. They are a young team with many inexperienced players at this level and seemed happy to occupy the crease and gain vital batting practice. This they did with some tenacity and King’s had to work hard to claim all the wickets under such circumstances.

The experienced opening attack of Abbas and Louis Anderson having played a total of 70 games were too tough to handle for the opposition top order but after their first spell had only one wicket to show for it. The introduction of the sharp and penetrative pace of Nick Tapper broke the stubborn 2nd wicket partnership which grew to 39 runs, the biggest for St Peter’s.

Skipper, Seb Macdonald rotated his bowlers skilfully and they all picked up wickets. Anderson, Maher and Max Chaplin (the 4th debutant in this format) picked up two each. The Maher and Tom Paranthoiene combination accounted for two wickets with the latter showing improved form behind the stumps after the rustiness of the summer break. Just when it looked like St Peter’s would reach the 50 over mark, Anderson claimed the last two in the 49thover, thereby succumbing them to a huge 137 run defeat.
