King’s College today announced the appointment of Reverend Warren William Watson as its new Senior Chaplain.

Rev Watson joins the College from Dilworth School, Remuera, where he has served as School Chaplain for more than ten years. He replaces Reverend Warner Wilder who retires from the College in December after 28 years of dedicated service.

The King’s College Senior Chaplain sits on the Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for Chapel worship and all other spiritual outreach including pastoral care for the College community, overseeing the teaching of Religious Studies in the classroom and overseeing outreach programmes by the College to the community.

King’s College Head Mr Simon Lamb says Rev Watson spent time at King’s College while undertaking Chaplaincy placements as part of his training for the Anglican Ordained Ministry.

“As a current King’s parent Rev Watson also has established relationships with the school and a deep understanding and commitment to our vision of offering a good all-round education to students in a Christian Anglican setting,” says Lamb.

“Rev Watson has a clear passion for pastoral care of young students. He understands the impact Chapel worship and our community service programme have in helping to prepare our young people for life beyond school.”

Rev Watson says his calling as a school Chaplain was to encourage transformative growth in young people physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

“I look forward to building on the strong foundations already in place with regards to service and the local community along with keeping Chapel worship and pastoral care of students a priority,” he says.

Rev Watson has a Bachelor of Theology from St John’s College, University of Auckland, and was ordained to the Auckland Anglican Diaconate in 2004 and to the Anglican Priesthood in 2005. Prior to joining Dilworth School, Rev Watson was Curate at Church of the Saviour, Blockhouse Bay. He has also served in pastoral support roles in private and state schools in the United Kingdom.

Rev Watson is married to Sarah who is a music teacher at King’s School. His son, Andrew, is currently a Year 10 student (Marsden) at King’s College.  Rev Watson begins his new role at King’s at the start of Term 1, 2017.
