An interest in law since the age of 10, Kingi, who is of Ngapuhi, Ngati Hau and Te Whakahotea descent, travelled to the United States last year with his partner, Kiri Toki to study at Boston's Harvard Law School.
Never dreaming he would ever go to Harvard, Kingi and Kiri were both awarded a Fullbright Scholarship which gave them each US$33,000 towards course fees.
Kingi attended Harvard following his studies in law, Māori and politics at the University of Auckland, and he has also spent time working as a prosecutor for the Crown in Auckland.
