On Wednesday 13 September, the Auckland Schools Debating Grand Final took place at Westlake Boys High School, bringing Secondary School Debating for 2017 to an exciting finish.

The King’s College Premier Advanced team faced tough competition against Saint Kentigern College, losing the moot, ‘This House would support a tax on robot labour’ after a close decision from the adjudicators.

The team was made up of Geneva Roy (Year 13, Taylor) who won third top speaker overall, Joshua Grant (Year 13, Marsden)and Benji Flacks (Year 13, Marsden).

Earlier this month, on 5 September, the Senior Open Final took place at King’s College with James Mead (Year 11, Averill) winning third top speaker and Lilly Stelling (Year 12, Taylor) winning top Senior Open speaker.

The full Senior Open team was made up of Lily Stelling, James Mead,Raphaela Seal (Year 12, Taylor) and Hamish Butler (Year 11, Marsden).

English teacher Grant McKibbin coaches the Senior Open team and said despite losing the moot to Lynfield College, it was a very close decision and came down to a split vote 2-1 decision.

“Overall, it has been a wonderful season and all the Senior Open debaters have been a joy to coach,” says Grant.
