One of our talented cyclists recently competed at the Ultimo Junior Tour of Central Hawkes Bay held on 25 and 26 March.
The tour consists of four stages over the weekend with the final stage being a 100 kilometre road race.
In the final race, Year 12 student Theo Gilbertson (Greenbank), together with two other riders broke away early with 95km remaining, building up a lead of more than two minutes on the pack by the end of the race.
Theo placed second in this final fourth stage and finished third in the overall U19 general classification.
Theo’s coach, Roman Van Uden, says he has shown great commitment over the summer months in preparation for New Zealand’s most competitive races at Under 19 level.
“His podium place shows that he is in fantastic form and improving his racing nous ahead of the Te Awamutu tour in 4 weeks’ time.”
The Te Awamutu tour is a selection event for the Cycling Junior World Championships.
