The Inter-House Senior Debating finals took place in King’s College Lecture Theatre on Friday 8 September, drawing a full crowd of students and teachers who came to watch the highly anticipated Marsden versus Taylor showdown.

In the end Taylor House were declared the winners, successfully affirming the moot, This House would lower the voting age to 16.

Both teams were exceptionally strong with Geneva Roy (Year 13) captaining Taylor and Benji Flacks (Year 13) and Josh Grant (Year 13) leading Marsden.

Each participant rose to the occasion to defend their argument and the debate really came alive during the final question and answer volley.  While Josh used his wit to win the crowd, Geneva maintained a calm composure and attacked each question with poise.

“It was a real clash of the titans this year, and the level of skill was awesome to watch,” says Teacher-in-Charge of Debating, Tom Lusk. “The Marsden boys were on fire, and kept the crowd riveted as they drove home their points. Unfortunately for them, the Taylor girls matched them with perfectly-constructed arguments and ended up taking the trophy.”

Old Collegian Richard Ngo (St John’s, 2008-2012), now an Oxford University Debate coach, took on the role of judicator and agreed it was a tough call to make.

All in all, it was a fantastic end to a very successful House Debating season.
