Four goals from captain Xavier Guy helped the Boys' First XI Hockey get its 2016 campaign in the Auckland Secondary Schools Championship off to a great start with a comfortable 6-0 victory over Avondale College at home on the evening of Wednesday, 11 May.

There were also goals for Luke Hindmarsh and Nick Wilson.

After having lost 11 of its 16 players that went to the National Championships last year, and with a new coach in Hitendra Patel, the Boys' First XI Hockey is in a rebuilding phase but the team has put in some encouraging performances in its warm-up matches. Wednesday’s game saw seven players make their Auckland Secondary Schools Championship debuts.

The First XI took an early lead when Xavier Guy fired home a drag flick at their first penalty corner of the match in the fifth minute and he added his second at the team’s second penalty corner in the 17th minute, following up his own shot that was saved and smashing the ball home.

In the second half, King’s superior fitness took its toll and the team started to wear down the Avondale defence. Xavier Guy grabbed his hat-trick with a well-taken individual effort in the 32nd minute and Luke Hindmarsh added the fourth with a neat deflection three minutes later. With the game opening out in the last quarter, Nick Wilson and Xavier Guy added further goals to complete the misery for Avondale.

Player of the Day was captain Xavier Guy who turned on a top quality performance on his return from Auckland duty at the National Under-21 tournament last week in Dunedin. There were also good performances from Keiran Patel and brothers Nick and Harrison Langrell-Read.
